Hi,
I am Julia and work as a Community Relations person for the WMF Advancement team. For my team I create a weekly newsletter about some of the amazing things going on across our communities. I am now starting to cross posting this here. I am always happy to hear suggestions and help with questions. Please note the newsletter is far from complete and is subjective as I am the one selecting what I share.
Happy start to the week,
The last four days were a whirlwind of fun with Wikimania going on ! I hope those who attended had a blast. If you didn’t get a chance to attend, don’t worry, this will start you off with catching up! Make yourself a tea
and enjoy.
Wikimania round up (edition one, I got a feeling more will be published throughout the week):
-
Missed the sessions?

Portuguese Wikipedia has proposed to delete more than 20,000 articles due to some of these articles being created by a banned editor, and others lacking consistency and maintenance. The editor who launched the recent proposal mentions “This is harmful to the community and it disproportionately increases the number of entries that must be maintained”, and they have named them as “pseudo articles”. You can review their discussions from July 2022 and December 2021.

My favourite new article of the week comes from German Wikipedia and showed me the amazing history of the neolithic archaeological site of Moorsiedlung. One of the many finds was a dugout canoe!

Julia
@JBrungs_WMF sorry to bring negative feedback in otherwise impressive overview,
but most of these links (without any reason) go through Facebook as forward link
and in that way are used for tracking…Hope you can avoid that by not copy-pasting.
Hi Z,
Thanks for pointing this out. We are investigating how to avoid this.
Best,

Good you take it seriously.

this one is great. i do the same thing, myself. thanks for this link!
I’ve been reading horror movie Wikipedia pages for years. Unlike movie reviews, Wikipedia walks you through every story beat, twist and spoiler, with a welcome clinical detachment that takes all the spooky vibes away. I don’t need to know if the movie’s good – I just need to know what was so sinister about Sinister.
Those who have seen Midsommar, for example, will understand the vast gulf between watching That One Part and reading …Wiki’s version of it.
Another good option is The Movie Spoiler, which includes crowdsourced, spoiler-filled recaps of “everything from American Beauty to Zoolander.”
