(Re)Introducing Movement Strategy - The Recommendations

Here is another text that helps explain how all the 10 Recommendations of the Movement Strategy work towards our goals (and work together) - Part 2 of 2:

Summary

The Movement Strategy is very ambitious. We are aiming to make our work more inclusive and equitable in the years ahead. We cannot be ‘essential’ to anything if we are not equitable. Platform technologies make Wikimedia possible. People make Wikimedia powerful.

Recommendations break this work up into 10 areas. They are:

1. Increase the Sustainability of Our Movement

  • Create people-centered approaches to generating and sharing resources

2. Improve User Experience

  • Enable everyone to contribute to and consume knowledge in Wikimedia

3. Provide for Safety and Inclusion

  • Ensure that our communities are healthy and safe so that all people can contribute to and consume free knowledge

4. Ensure Equity in Decision-Making

  • Share responsibility and accountability in decision-making and resource allocation

5. Coordinate Across Stakeholders

  • Deepen engagement with spaces for communication and collaboration

6. Invest in Skills and Leadership Development

  • Build the capacities of Wikimedia individuals and organizations and support new leadership

7. Manage Internal Knowledge

  • Ensure internal knowledge is easy to capture, find, consume, and adapt for diverse purposes

8. Identify Topics for Impact

  • Understand the impact of our work and the potential for abuse; improve coverage of key topics

9. Innovate in Free Knowledge

  • Expand free knowledge content and formats

10. Evaluate, Iterate, and Adapt

  • Monitor, analyze, and learn from our activities so we can be deliberate and nimble - so we can minimize risks and maximize opportunities

Read more about each one and find out about some of the programmes and projects (we call them Initiatives) we need to work on so that we can make progress.

More than 40 Initiatives → A Level Deeper

Each Recommendation is further broken down into what we call “Initiatives”. These are more detailed areas of work we need to engage in together across the Movement. Some of this work needs to be coordinated. Some of it needs to happen in localized contexts. All of it requires people working together. So… join us!
