Movement Strategy initiative #34: Skill Development Infrastructure

Skill Development Infrastructure

Wikimedia 2018-20 Recommendation 05 final.svg

In order to Invest in Skills and Leadership Development, we need to invest more in technological infrastructure for skill development. This may be through improving existing skill development platforms, or by building a completely new one. This skill development platform would allow users to collaboratively build learning resources in multiple languages, to easily search through and use them, and to access diverse formats of materials (like text, video, and more). The platform would also include learning materials for outside organizations or new members in the movement, thus saving the time and resources to onboard them. The platform and its materials should be scalable and sustainable in line with the Movement Strategy principles.

There is currently an experimental platform called WikiLearn, which is closely related to this initiative.

Invest in new or existing technological infrastructure which facilitates learning of skills through functional, collaborative, real-time tools and quality content. This requires:

  • A user-friendly, searchable, multilingual, multi-format, curated platform to host learning resources (e.g. tutorials, videos, online training, etc.).
  • Learning resources (e.g. “learning packs”) directed to individuals and organizations joining the Movement to encourage self-directed knowledge acquisition and development of skills within our practices and roles.
  • Learning packs required to understand issues that relate to scalability, sustainability and other areas considered in the Wikimedia Movement Strategy recommendations.
