Hello Zita! Yeah, the Wiki Mentor Africa is a project that seeks to bring in more African developers and technicians into the wiki technical community. And this is to be achieved via mentorship.

How it works
Experienced technical Wikimedians who are interested in mentoring and bringing onboard new African Wikimedians sign up to be mentors on the platform and every month, the WMA community organises a 2-3day online workshop availing the participants the opportunity to see the mentors.

During these events, a mentor is given the opportunity to guide or discuss with the participants on a technical interest of theirs. And on the last day of the workshop, participants who are interested in the specific tool are encouraged to reach out to the mentor for mentorship via the project’s page or the telegram group.

In the past 3 months, we have had 3 editions with an average participant of 55 join the training sessions. So far, over 150 participants majorly young people have joined the telegram group with 3 mentors adopting some of the participants.

Yes, I have read this content. It is great to know that over the years support and funding for the Middle East and the African Region have increased and there are a lot of contributions coming from the Middle East and African region. I also do look forward to see more growth in the Middle East and African region in a few years to come.

Hi @Zuz_WMF, it’s always refreshing to learn about the progress in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East about funding. I just believe active Wikipedia editing needs to increase because that is one of the challenges we are finding it hard solving.

Members of the Wikimedia community in India are using Wikimedia projects to document oral culture by creating video and audio recordings of oral culture with this toolkit. The recorded oral culture videos and audios are upload on Wikimedia Commons, the videos are transcribed and upload on Wikisource. You can read more about this project here. A similar project can be potentially useful for language communities in Africa. Are there similar projects ongoing in Africa that you know of?
