What is a category?
- Category: The primary means of organizing topics. Each topic is placed in exactly one category. Categories have permissions which can restrict which users can create, reply, and see its topics. You can also configure notification preferences per category or even mute them as explained below. Categories are a similar concept to a ‘forum’ on other sites.
Public Categories
To request a category that is public (in other words, all users can see and contribute to), users should:
-
Post a short statement in the #site-feedback category, requesting the creation of the category and outlining the following details:
- What’s the name of the category?
- What will this category be used for?
- Will this category require a moderator?
-
Anyone can share their feedback about the proposed category. Within at least one week that the statement has been posted, the Moderation team will decide and proceed with the creation of the category.
Private Categories
Categories can be made private for access by only those in a defined group. Only members (Trust Level 2 users) can apply for a private category. To request a private category, users should:
- Send a message to @staff with your request. In your request outline the following details:
- What’s the name of the category? (It will also be the name of the private group we create for the category.)
- What will this category be used for?
- Who will be the owners of the group? (Ideally two or three; the owners of the group can manage the group membership - the people who have access to the category.)
- Will this category require a moderator?
- Within one week that the message being sent, the Moderation team will decide and proceed with the creation of the category.
